About 2D barcodes The VINtrack 2D laser scanner is a combination 2D/1D laser. It connects via USB and runs under Windows 98, 2000, ME, MacOS 8.0 and above, and 4690 OS v2.3 and above. It will scan Federal labels and PVIN’s as well as 2D titles and other PDF417 barcodes. 2D labels can be found on some vehicle titles, drivers’ licenses, on vehicles as a VIN, and vehicle parts, as well as other labels related to vehicles. This laser scans 1D barcodes as well as directly into a computer. You can also use the 2D connection to scan directly into VINtrack, VIN edit programs, at your stolen vehicle prompt, or anywhere the cursor is. (If you purchased a VINtrack Mobile system you can add a 2D reader for $599.00 instead of purchasing the VINtrack-2D above)Two-dimensional bar code symbologies (2D) have been making their way into our industry. Linear bar codes (1D) have served the auto industry well for over 10 years. However, a major drawback is the limitation of the amount of data they hold. Currently we use 1D for the Federal labels, GM PVIN’s, parts labels and secondary numbers. Data capacity and space efficiency are two of the major advantages of 2D symbologies. 2D should be looked at as a portable data file. There are also security features that can be used with 2D. You could have a label cut in half and still read all of the data that was on the full label. This will help us when the suspects remove only part of the label. 2D is currently being used in many states for several different applications. Some are being placed on titles and registrations; others are being put on the windshields or doorposts of vehicles for smog programs. Isuzu Amigo, Rodeo, and Honda Passport put a 2D label on the driver’s doorpost that contains the VIN. These labels contain vehicle, emissions, registered owner, and part and warranty information. There are two main types of 2D that effect law enforcement, PDF417 and Data Matrix. This unit does not scan Data Matrix. A PDF417 symbol can encode more than a kilobyte of data – up to 100 times the capacity of a linear bar code of similar size, (250 characters per square inch vs. 28 characters). The American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) recommends PDF417. Many states use them on titles, including AK, AL, AZ, CO, CT, DL, DC, FL, GA, HI, ID, IL, IN, IA, KY, LA, ME, MD, MA, MN, MS, MT, NV, NH, NC, ND, OR, NY, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, UT, VA, WA, WV, and WI.
