With the average age of a stolen vehicle being 7 years old, our enhanced readers with specific protocols can access VINs that generic OBD readers can not. We have pulled VINs from 1995 Fords and 1996 GM products.

All generic scan tools can only access the Powertrain, no matter what SAE Modes (J1979/J2190) they use for communication. With our expansions, you can access dozens of systems (ABS, transmission, GEM, SRS/Airbags, Instrument Cluster, etc.) generic scan tools can't even see. This gives you access to thousands of sensors and dozens of bi-directional controls/system tests including mileage when reported. We work closely with AutoEnginuity and chose their vehicle diagnostic software for OBD ECU VIN and data reading. This software is enhanced for our VIN purposes and is also a complete vehicle diagnostics program. that also retrieves the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and other pertinent data from OBD-II compliant vehicles (1996 and newer SAE J1979). Our newest CAN enabled version will ensure that it will communicate with the upcoming protocols to be in place by 2008. CAN is currently required for Ford, Jaguar, Mazda, and some Mercedes, Nissan, Porsche, Toyota, and GM.

OBD ECU data information
The Society of Automotive Engineering (SAE) recommended that VIN data be available from the vehicle's computer, SAE J1979, Mode 09 (1997). CARB mandates that all 2005 models report the VIN from one ECU per SAE J1979 (Title 13, California Code Regulations, Section 1968.2(f) (4.8)). Some 2000 model year vehicles started adding the VIN and many began in model years 2002.

As manufacturers comply with the standard to add the VIN our software will be ready to pull it out without having to upgrade it.  VINs will be mandatory starting in 2007. This software has enhanced modes for GM, Ford and Chrysler VIN's ensuring VIN reads that standard OBD readers can't access. For generic readers see VINtrack-EZ OBD below.

OBD ECU VIN for Windows or Windows Mobile: Our OBD VIN software package includes a full version of engine diagnostics software, 2 data link connectors for the vehicle and a USB interface cable for PCs. Please specify if you want this for Windows PCs or a PDA. VINtrack EZ Memory OBD (Item #EZMEMOBD) This OBD CAN reader is a step up from the EZ OBD in that it displays the full VIN on one line and it retains all the data in memory as well as displays DTC definitions on screen. Even though this is a generic reader we have pulled VINs from 2000 model year Land Rovers, 2001 Fords, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, Plymouths, Kia, Honda, Toyota, GM and many others. It works with all 1996 and newer cars & light trucks that are OBD II compliant (including the CAN, VPW, PWM, ISO and KWP 2000 protocols). As a general rule these generic readers only pull newer vehicle VINs as they work with the SAE standard, not proprietary code as our OBD ECU VIN reader does. Currently the Geniscan GS400 will not pull out older VINs as the above OBD ECU VIN software can, but it is quick, easy, and very affordable. The entire VIN displays on one line and is stored in memory. We are pleased with its performance and it also displays diagnostic trouble codes. VINtrack EZ OBD: We are working with Autel Intelligent Technology to create an affordable alternative to capturing OBD ECU VINs (Geniscan GS300). This featured reader is the least expensive functional unit we have found for generic VIN reading. Even though this is a generic reader we have pulled VINs from 2000 model year Land Rovers, 2001 Fords, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, Plymouths, Kia, Honda, Toyota, GM and many others.
